Libby Torphy was born in Williamson, West Virginia, and spent her childhood near Columbus, Ohio. Her family moved to Bloomington, Indiana as she was entering her freshman year of high school, and she never left. She is a mom, a grandma, an avid sports fan, a retired teacher, and a life-long learner.
Libby's first job was in retail. She was a stay home mom until her children were old enough to be in school. She was a volunteer at their nursery school, and a member of the board of directors. When they were in elementary school, she volunteered in the school library, on the playground, and in the cafeteria. She tutored students, and with the encouragement of the teachers in the building, she went back to school to get teaching credentials. Until she was hired as a classroom teacher, Libby was a substitute teacher and teacher aide. She taught in the Monroe County school system for 25 years, retiring from the classroom in May, 2016.
Her interest in space exploration was renewed when she assisted the staff with exhibits at the NASA museum in Barstow, California in the fall of 2016.
