Debbie Montenegro holds a Master of Science in Information Science with a Health Informatics Specialization from University of North Texas and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Southern Methodist University. While at SMU, Debbie completed an internship where she worked in the lab with a research team of chemists and biologists. Debbie also completed a teacher certification program and taught both Chemistry and Environmental Science at the senior high school level. While obtaining her master’s degree, she worked at a local public library. After obtaining her graduate degree, she worked as the Learning Resource Center Manager at a nursing school where she assisted nursing students and faculty. Debbie then worked as a Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Analyst working on National Institute of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and industry-funded studies. She has been published in medical journals and co-author work presented at medical conferences.
Debbie Montenegro is currently a “researcher turned outreacher”. She is the Consumer Health Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region (NNLM SCR), an outreach and education office for the National Library of Medicine, an institute of the National Institutes of Health. The NNLM SCR office is located at UNT Health Science Center. Debbie coordinates consumer health outreach programs throughout a five-state region; Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. She is a science educator, professional development educator, grant application reviewer, outreach coordinator, content creator, and science communicator all-in-one. She offers classes, conference presentations, and webinars on both grant writing and astronaut health resources amongst other projects.
