Since Juan Villafane Rios was a kid, he has had a fascination with the cosmos and everything that makes up the celestial dome. He remembers spending a lot of time at dawn and long hours observing the movement of the planets in the night sky through the months. It was not until he took a course in physics applied to astronomy in school that he became more interested in the subject and joined the Puerto Rico Astronomy Society (PRAS) in the mid-90s. That organization has given him the opportunity to travel to Curacao with members of his family to observe the total solar eclipse of February 26, 1998. From that moment on, he decided to share with others his passion for one of the things that motivated him most in life -- astronomy.
As an active member, current president of the PRAS and a science speaker, he wishes to continue sharing that same enthusiasm and impacting the communities that exist around his island, especially for the children and students of the different academic institutions through conferences, workshops and stargazing activities.
The Puerto Rico Astronomy Society, Inc. (PRAS) is a non-profit private educational institution, established and incorporated in 1985.It is the largest and oldest astronomical organizationon the island. The PRAS's mission is to observe the night sky, spread astronomy and promote research at the amateur level. The PRAS is affiliated to NASA through the Puerto Rico Space Grant Consortium and its educational services are endorsed and by that institution.
