Biographical Information:

Shannon Murphy decided she wanted to be an astronomer at 14, when she discovered studying the stars was actually a real job you could get paid to do. However, in graduate school she found teaching was far more interesting and rewarding than theoretical astrophysics.

She worked as a part-time introductory astronomy and physics lecturer for 7 years at several colleges. The low pay and long hours finally paid off and she recently became the classroom and laboratory services technician for the University of Michigan Department of Astronomy in charge of student facilities and helping faculty develop new course material. She actually gets paid for using the observatory and writing planetarium shows!
